What to Ask in a Job Interview: SLP Earl...

Megan Peveto M.S. CCC-SLP
About this episode

In this episode, I'm answering the question of what to ask in a job interview. When interviewing for a new job, it is your opportunity to gather information about the position, the work environment, and what you can expect from the position.

What to Ask in a Job Interview

Firstly, you want to ensure you understand the specifics of the job. For example, home health SLP positions are different compared to a clinic or school position.

  • What are the primary responsibilities of this role?
  • What is the typical caseload size for an SLP in this position?
  • Are there specific populations or disorders I will be primarily working with?

Work Environment

Understanding the culture and dynamics of your potential workplace is vital- we want to enjoy going into our job, not dread it.

  • Can you describe the work environment and culture here?
  • How do the therapists collaborate and support each other and parents/caregivers?
  • What is the supervision/mentorship structure like for clinicians new to the setting, slp-assistants, or SLP-interns?

Available Resources & Support

Additionally, you want to know what resources and support are available.

  • What resources and materials are available to SLPs (e.g. assessment tools, technology)?
  • What therapy materials are available through the company, and what are you expected to purchase?
  • How is administrative support handled, such as scheduling, daily notes, evaluation reports, and billing?
  • What are the performance expectations for this role in the first six months to a year?
  • How does the organization support work-life balance for its employees?
  • Finally, what are some of the biggest challenges faced by SLPs in this role or within this organization?

Remember, interviews are as much about you finding the right fit as they are about employers finding the right candidate. Furthermore, don't be afraid to ask questions and get the information you need to make an informed decision.
