The gut contains a community of microorganisms what we call a gut flora or microbiota. This community is made up of bacteria, immune cells, viruses, worms, and fungi. A healthy gut means that there is harmony in this community. A healthy gut also communicates with the brain through nerves and hormones, which helps maintain general health and well-being. By the way, gut means the whole tract from the mouth all the way to the anus.
