This week, The Dr. Ardis Show is a solo presentation on Bell's palsy, the sudden one-sided facial paralysis linked to inflammation and compression of the seventh cranial nerve. Dr. Ardis opens with the Cleveland Clinic's definition, symptoms, and incidence (about 15 to 30 per 100,000 people a year), then covers the viruses usually blamed for it (herpes simplex, shingles and chickenpox, Epstein-Barr, COVID-19) and the standard treatment, prednisone, walking through the side effects listed on the drug's label. He then covers a CDC Emerging Infectious Diseases study of South Korean data from 2021 to 2022 on facial palsy after COVID-19 vaccination, and the other vaccines that have been reported in connection with Bell's palsy.
The second half is the research on nutrients and nerve support: a study linking lower vitamin D levels to slower Bell's palsy recovery, a small trial of vitamin C added to prednisone, an animal study on B-vitamin complex and nerve regeneration, zinc's role in nerve and blood vessel health, a blood-level study finding higher lead and cadmium in Bell's palsy patients, the research behind EDTA chelation, licorice root and wormwood, and acupuncture.
