Brian discusses the Emotional Cycle of Change, a model developed by Don Kelley and Daryl Conner and published in 1979, and why it explains the sinking feeling that shows up a few weeks into almost every decision you were excited about. Unlike most change models, this one was built for voluntary change, the kind you chose, which is exactly what makes the downturn so disorienting when it arrives. Brian walks through the five stages as they show up in a business and focuses on the one where nearly everything dies, including the distinction Kelley and Conner drew between people who check out loudly and people who check out quietly while still attending every meeting. He then gets practical about what to do when you are in it, why the moment to write your exit conditions is while you are still optimistic, and how to tell a hard decision from a genuinely wrong one.
