SLP 470: Only Dead Fish Swim with the Cu...

THE WELLNESS COUCH
About this episode

‘At the moment preventative health measures by the medical profession are not viable. Because, for me to talk about someone’s weight, health, de-prescribing them, and getting them off medication it cannot be done in 6 minutes. Most people in this holistic health as Doctors are spending an hour on their initial consultation. They have to. If I could have a conversation just to break the subject will take me half an hour so you can’t bulk bill. Because your staff are going to be earning more money an hour than you are. And I know that sounds horrible, but that’s not a business model for people to go to work. So, then they end up going to hospitals and use the hospital model, which doesn’t work either. So, therefore we have taken our message to the people. If people start believing in preventative health and what they can do themselves.’ ~ Gary Fettke

‘I said to just listen to the science, and I said darling they’re not listening, the people who run the guidelines, the medical board, all these health professionals are not listening to what you are saying. The people were. At one event we had 600 people in Launceston to hear Gary speak but no health professionals, or very few, and I just went, ‘Something is missing here.’ And I always say if you look at medical education it’s so siloed, academic, they are taught how to research, they are taught how to think and it’s ‘Read, repeat, reward’ as Gary often says. I trained in the nursing system in the hospital, so we had a 6-week block learning academia and then we were thrown into the wards, and we would see what worked and what didn’t. You know, this isn’t working so why? A very practical examination on everything we had to do.’ ~ Belinda Fettke

Description: What a rare and powerful opportunity to be a fly on the wall for this eye-opening conversation between two extraordinary humans – both deeply committed to health, well-being, love, and the greater good of humanity. In this heartfelt two-part interview, we uncover what truly drives this inspiring duo, their unwavering courage to stand for what’s right, and the passion that fuels their mission to make a meaningful difference in the world.

Gary and Belinda Fettke are a team… 40 years of marriage and they are stronger than ever.

Gary was reported to the medical board in 2014 for recommending his patient, with complications of Type 2 diabetes, reduce their sugar intake and was subjected to a 2 ½ year star chamber investigation, and threatened with losing his medical licence should he continue to talk about nutrition and ‘food as medicine’.

The final determination stated; – “A medical degree does not qualify an Orthopaedic Surgeon to advise their patients to reduce sugar” But, don’t worry. It never really stopped him.

When #Cereal4Brekkie came after Gary, Belinda says “The Mumma Bear came out!” Determined to clear her husband’s name she began investigating the vested interests shaping the high carb, low fat dietary guidelines and has spent a decade researching ‘Who decides what we eat, when we eat, and why?’

“Science evolves by being challenged, not by being followed” Dr. Gary Fettke

Their definition of Self Love is:

Gary: Love is an interesting word. I don’t actually love myself. I have self-respect and you find yourself when you find the ability to say no. Be truthful to self and others. It’s doing the right thing.

Belinda: I think it is really, really powerful. Life experiences change us. It is loving what you do, it is standing up for what you believe in and feeling fearless, safe and comfortable. Self-love is self-care and self-nurturing.

Their favourite quote is from:

Gary: Only dead fish swim with the current. You know you are truly alive when you are swimming against the current.

Belinda: Science evolves by being challenged not followed.

Quotes: You’ve got to have a good sense of humour to be married. Statistics are there to be manipulated. At the age of 37 Gary was diagnosed with pituitary cancer. I don’t get headaches I give headaches! Doctors need to learn a lot. Doctors do not say the Hippocratic Oath they say an oath that encompasses the Hippocratic Oath but it is not that. Our hospital systems don’t work. We have never loved Medicare because it doesn’t work. The more you cut costs the more you shorten the preventative care. Cutting costs at the interface is going to cost more long term. We are incentivised to do things to people. Preventative health is the ONLY way out. If we can change the US guidelines we can change the Australian guidelines. I have had to invert the pyramid and put the people at the top. There is no time for care anymore. There is no gravity, the Earth sucks! Where there’s smoke there is fire.
