200 BM Daily Vocabulary #59 | rigorous

BM ENGLISH SPEAKING INSTITUTE PVT LTD.
About this episode

We have heard the saying ‘practice makes a man perfect’, haven’t we? Shall we try to modify it? Let’s say rigorous practice makes a man perfect. How does it sound now? Here, rigorous means thorough and adhering to rules or guidelines to attain a certain result.

Listen carefully on how we can use the word rigorous in 8 different situations in 8 different sentences.

Example number 1 of 8: Samuel was a long distance runner and would participate in state-level competitions. Often, he used to win Silver or Bronze medal but desired the Gold. So what do you think he did?  Well, he enrolled for a rigorous training workshop by a well-known coach. And, yes, he achieved his goal.

Example number 2 of 8: The rigorous security check at public places is for the safety of the citizens.  Hence the police and government-run awareness campaigns requesting people to co-operate with security agencies.

Example number 3 of 8: Mrs. Issac retired recently from her school. Her present and ex-students talked very fondly (means lovingly) about her. One of the things all of them agreed was that while she was a loving teacher, she was very rigorous about discipline in school.

Example number 4 of 8: Most of us are aware of the benefits of Ayurveda, right? It is a branch of medicine which has a large number of followers globally. The treatment under Ayurveda needs rigorous control of diet, especially avoiding oily and unhealthy foods.

Example number 5 of 8: We have seen commandos in action in movies or news channels.  The rigorous training that the commandos undergo is unbelievable. They have long and strict physical training schedules. They are trained to survive without water, food, and sleep for long hours.

Example number 6 of 8: Globally, more and more financial transactions are happening online. It is estimated that the total value of global financial transactions is several trillion dollars. Such massive (means large) system needs rigorous controls in the information security to avoid any financial frauds.

Example number 7 of 8: Om caterers got a huge order for catering to the wedding of a prominent businessman’s son. The owner, Mr. Kartar Singh, realized that this was a big opportunity for them to create a name for themselves. He rigorously monitored the preparation of an entire range of dishes. As a result, everyone praised the food preparations of Om caterers.

Example number 8 of 8: We know that our Army carried out operations in extremely difficult terrains (which mean geographical areas). The vehicles they use in these challenging areas must serve them well under these tough conditions. Hence, these vehicles are rigorously maintained by the army personnel round the year.
