Today’s word is: intense –The meaning of intense is a high degree or a strong emotion, existing in an extreme degree, having or showing a characteristic in extreme degree.

In this English vocabulary lesson, you will learn how to use the word intense. We are sure that this ESL lesson will help you to enhance your English vocabulary and speak English fluently and confidently.

Toby was eagerly waiting for his dad to return from his official trip. After his dad returned, they both played their favorite game on the X box. His mother was surprised to watch Toby play the game with extreme interest. His eyes were glued to the television screen (means that he was constantly looking at the TV screen and not even turning his face). Do you know what does this mean? This means that Toby’s involvement in the game was intense.

Listen carefully on how we can use the word intense in 8 different situations in 8 different sentences.

Example number 1 of 8: The business management college included a strict schedule of intense theory sessions, thrice a week and practical sessions twice a week. This offered a good blend (combination) of theory and practical sessions to the students.

Example number 2 of 8: It was towards the end of the cricket match when the last over was remaining, the match grew more intense. It was difficult to predict the winning team.

Example number 3 of 8: The play zone for kids in the mall had hi-tech video games with the latest graphics in high resolution. Children and adults equally enjoyed playing them. The graphics were so real that they would play the games with intense concentration.

Example number 4 of 8: The dentist had to perform her first root canal. Prior to the operation, she took an intense look at the area of operation. And her efforts paid off (operation was successful).

Example number 5 of 8: Anthony was going to propose to Whitney after dating her for about two months. He had planned a special dinner with her on the beach. While dining, Anthony was intensely gazing (steady look) into her eyes and smiling constantly. This gave her a clue of what was going to follow and she was prepared to take the next step.

Example number 6 of 8: Mrs. Griffin was surprised to hear the intense voice of his boss while conducting interviews. It showed his complete involvement in the interview process.

Example number 7 of 8: Brijesh fell from his bike and his elbow got dislocated. He experienced intense pain till the time he received anesthesia.
