Ethics in Private Practice, US Public He...

MWH Production
About this episode

Matt joins the show this week after a long week that included a baby Sprinkle Shower, fishing with his kids, and created a singular drive for his entire family to use to share photos.   Michelle has set up shop in Kansas and continues to unload boxes around the home as she and her family acclimate themselves to the neighborhood.  Mike continues to improve his golf skills while honing the private practice to be prepared for the school year.

On today’s show, we discuss how will you be using a mask in therapy (clear or not) and the ethics of taking on private practice patients from a current work location.  Michelle sat down with the United States Public Health Services Speech and Language Pathologists for this week’s interview.  This week’s Informed SLP looks at what it takes to return to previous activities following a TBI.  We also look at our SSPOD Shoutouts and Due Process.  The ASHA spotlight is about the resources available to returning School Based SLPs including a Covid workload calculator.

The Discord is up and ready for people to interact with the crew 24/7 with a new website, www.discord.speechsciencepodcast.com.

SSPOD Shoutout: Do you know an SLP who deserves a digital fist bump or shout out?  We want to know your #SSPODSHOUTOUT, which is recognition for someone doing something awesome somewhere.    This week we recognize the Speech and Language Virtual Rooms group!

SSPOD Due Process:  Do you have a complaint or need to vent, then you want to participate in the #SSPODDUEPROCESS.  This week’s due process was submitted anonymously:  Is it inspiroporn or just innocent videos on Tik Tok?

Topic #1:    What is the importance of non-verbals and being able to see the articulators during therapy?

Topic #2:     If you want to make your private practice stronger, can you just solicit patients from former or current work settings?

Interview: Part 1 of a 2 part interview series looking at the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Services and what being a Speech and Language Pathologist serving on the front lines of Public Health.  Special thanks to the following Speech and Language Pathologists who have participated in interview:

Non-Clinical Billets

CAPT Mercedes Benitez McCrary

CAPT Michelle Baker-Bartlett

CDR Cathleen Davies

CDR Dean Trombley

LCDR Carla Chase

Clinical Billets

CDR Erik Cala

CDR Joann Sents

LT Courtney Wood

The Informed SLP: “Will I be able to get back to (fill in the blank) after my TBI?”  That’s the question that clinicians and clients are trying to address as the end goal of therapy. Two studies elucidate the importance of metacognitive processing times, auditory processing, higher-level language and wearing head gear as critical factors that directly influence one’s ability to return to activities of daily living for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

ASHA Spotlight: As schools return this week or next, ASHA has updated their school based resources.
