Gagging vs. Choking: What is the Differe...

KATIE FERRARO
About this episode

#4: What is the difference between gagging and choking? Many parents are fearful to start solid foods because they are fearful of their baby gagging on food. But gagging is actually a good thing: it’s a natural and necessary part of the learning how-to-eat process.

In this episode you’ll learn why babies gag when they eat and what to do (...and more importantly, what NOT to do) when your baby gags. I also explain how gagging and choking are different, what causes babies to choke and what we can do to lower choking risk and prevent choking when feeding the baby.

If you are scared of gagging and not sure you can let your baby start solid-foods because of gagging, I share a simple 5-word mantra you can repeat to yourself that will help you stay calm as you allow your baby to recover from a gag without intervening.

If you’re ready to raise an independent eater and prevent picky eating (...and get over your fear of gagging!) then let’s get started learning about baby-led weaning together! Subscribe, rate and review the podcast here.
