Stress & Weight Gain | The Domino Effect...

Ben Azadi
About this episode

Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 66 with Andrea Siebert and Dr. Sonya Jensen

Today, I am blessed to have here with me, Dr. Sonya Jensen, a mom of 2 boys, a business owner, a yoga teacher, a workshop leader, and a Women’s Health Expert. After years of working closely with women and their families, her mission and purpose have become clear, to Inspire women so they can live free and balanced lives.

In 2009, Dr. Sonya and her husband, Dr. Nicholas Jensen, opened Divine Elements Naturopathic Family Wellness in the Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, where they help clients create lasting changes in their overall health and well-being for the entire family.

Plus, life coach, relationship expert, mom to two young men, Andrea Siebert, joins the show.  Andrea helps elevate all those she comes into contact with. Andrea’s compassion and love for helping others find joy in their lives are one of her greatest gifts.

In this episode, Andrea explains how she grew up with rheumatoid arthritis – as an adult; she tried a new diet and natural medicine; it completely changed her life. Then, Dr. Sonya Jensen describes how she got involved in the health industry. The two talk about why women are more likely to get sick; they are continually giving to others over themselves. Later, Dr. Sonya and Andrea discuss the importance of getting off the hamster wheel, treating autoimmune disease, and why we all need to find a community.

[07:45] About Andrea Siebert

  • Andrea was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at two years old. Her doctors weren’t trying to break the autoimmune; they were maintaining the disease.
  • In her early adulthood, Andrea moved to Oregon, where they had natural medicine. They wanted to help her have a better and more functional life. She started changing her diet and got off her medications.
  • Andrea was able to exercise more. She was no longer the person who was afraid of getting sick because of her weak immune system.
  • When conventional doctors tell someone they can’t do something; it prevents them from ever doing it.
  • “If you believe something, you can actually make that happen.” -Andrea
  • “The brain doesn’t know the difference between fiction and reality.” -Andrea

[12:20] About Dr. Sonya Jensen

  • Sonya knew she was on this planet to be of service. From a young age, she knew there was real beauty in our bodies. However, her family members were having poor health issues.
  • Sonya knows that the thoughts we are having will result in physical manifestations.
  • Culture plays such a role in the way we make decisions.
  • Sonya sees how women get so sick because we are natural givers. Women forget to fill their cup up first before others.
  • “Women are the centers of their communities and families.” -Dr. Sonya

[15:50] How to Get Off the Hamster Wheel

  • The first step is awareness. What does success look like for us? Assess where you are and where you want to be.
  • What does abundance mean to you? For Andrea, abundance implies freedom. Freedom of time and choosing what she does. Now, Andrea has wholly shifted her lifestyle based on having an abundant life.
  • It depends on what gives you fulfillment. Some people might find fulfillment working harder. Recognize what you want first.

[18:35] The Domino Effect of Autoimmune Disease

  • When your immune system is depressed, it will be like a domino effect.
  • Other organs will start getting fatigued. People will treat the symptoms of autoimmune. However, the body is still working really hard to survive. Instead of going after the root cause, people will try and treat the symptoms.
  • The first thing to do is to remove the interference.

[20:55] Treating Stress

  • Showing someone how stress is affecting their health is the first step in treating stress.
  • As soon as our cortisol spikes, our other hormone levels will lower.
  • Many people thrive off of stress. We need to reduce the inflammation.
  • Getting into ketosis is a tool of lowering cortisol and getting into a more relaxed state.

[24:00] Finding Community

  • Statistics show that people you surround yourself with is what you become like. You need people to pick you up and support you.
  • We, as humans, need each other. Without relationships, there is no growth.
  • If you look at creation, there is nothing that is by itself.

[26:20] Stress and Weight-Gain

  • Insulin is associated with stress levels. Your physiology can’t tell the difference between you being upset with your partner and actual danger.
  • Even if you eat the right things, your belly fat might not be disappearing.
  • Sometimes, stress can affect your body more than food does. It is so impactful not just with weight, but also how your body will heal.
  • Are you eating and fasting so much that it is actually stressing you out?
  • “I’m a coach, but I need a coach.” -Andrea

[29:45] About the Naturally Brave Retreat

  • We need to step out of our hamster wheel and step into a place that is supportive and safe.
  • It is incredibly hard to practice being parasympathetic on a hamster wheel.
  • At the Naturally Brave Retreat, they will give actual tools to utilize afterward.
  • Andrea and Dr. Sonya are still in touch with their old participants.
  • They will do yoga, fasting, and teach mindset tools.
  • Sonya and Andrea’s favorite part of the retreat was when everybody started teaching and helping each other out.
  • Anybody willing and able to allow themselves to transform is able to attend the retreat.
  • Book the retreat here.

[38:35] Having More Awareness in Your Life

  • We do not breath well; most of us do not breath through the belly. If we are not breathing, then we won’t be able to focus, concentrate, or feel nourished.
  • “Breath is our best friend.” Dr. Sonya
  • Sonya loves to utilize the breath of fire.
  • If you’ve been doing keto for a year and you do not see results – then change it up. If you have a morning routine, change it up!
  • Constantly changing is forcing your body to adapt. The body has to rise up to the occasion and do what it needs to do.

[47:00] Practicing Gratitude

  • Think about three things you grateful for that you did. Then, make sure to either say it out loud or write it down.
  • There are a lot of people who struggle with thinking about gratitude. Ask someone in your circle what they are grateful for.
  • 150,000 die each day. Just knowing that is enough to be grateful for.
