Why doing bad work, and less work, is a ...

About this episode

Last week Obaid and I talked about two things which inspired this episode . . .

1) Take a thousand photos and you might get a good one.

2) Set a daily routine/ritual so that in time you reach your goals.

In this episode I expand on these two thought by reading excepts out of my upcoming book "Anchored: The discipline to stop drifting".

There are two main thoughts being shared.

1) Quantity of Quality: If you put in the reps of producing and creating (rather than being paralyzed by wanting to only produce "quality" art).

2) Limiting Work Load and Importance of Sleep: Limiting work, and ensuring sleep, are both integral component of productivity and creativity.

Here are some questions to help you think through what your twenty-mile-march might be...

The difficult part is deciding in which area of your life to initiate the Twenty-Mile March. To determine the small, daily steps you need to take, you need to know where you are going. Complete the following list to determine what your personal Twenty-Mile March will be.

  1. Review your life vision: if you don’t have one, make one.
    • (Ask yourself what you want to be said of you when you die)
  2. List the long-term goals that serve your life vision.
    • What would you have to achieve, or commit your life to for you life vision to become true. These would be you long team (10, 20, 30 year goals)
  3. Examine the short-term goals that serve your long-term goals and life vision.
    • What must be done in the next 2-3 years to set yourself up for reaching your longterm goals.
  4. Determine the area, or goal, that holds the greatest importance in this season in light of where you hope to end up.
  5. Once you have narrowed down the area of life or a specific goal, break down what you have to do on a daily basis to achieve that task. (Don’t get carried away in trying to do everything every day.)
  6. Ideally, the daily task can be completed in one or two hours. It is also best if you are able to complete the “march” in the morning before lunch, because this is the time of day where your motivation is the highest.
  7. The task should be more than researching or planning your dream. It should be doing, learning, and growing from experience. For example, if you want to become better at photography, take and edit a few photos during the hour. If you want to grow in a particular relationship, write a letter, make a phone call, or grab a coffee with that person.

Don’t be overwhelmed if you aren’t sure what area to pick or how to progress. Start somewhere, head out, and in a week or month’s time, you will not have lost anything even if you decide to change course. You will be on the road, and that is what matters.
