In this reaction to Caleb Flynn’s sentencing allocution, I break down the psychology of denial, shame, public image, and why some people appear unable to take accountability even when the evidence and consequences are overwhelming. Flynn was convicted of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, and of additional charges related to the case; he was sentenced to life without parole while continuing to proclaim his innocence. This is not a clinical diagnosis of Caleb Flynn, but an analysis of narcissistic traits such as image management, blame shifting, entitlement, and avoiding responsibility. We also need to keep the focus where it belongs: Ashley Flynn, her loved ones, and the devastating impact of domestic violence. If you are experiencing abuse or feel unsafe, contact local emergency services or a domestic-violence resource.
