What if anxiety isn't the enemy, but your body's way of telling you something needs attention? In this episode, EJ and Tarah sit down with Dr. Nicole Cain, author of Panic Proof, to explore how anxiety affects relationships, why it can show up as anger, and how understanding your body's signals can help rebuild emotional safety and connection.
In this episode, we talk about:
Anxiety isn't always the problem. Sometimes, it's a signal that something deeper needs attention. Instead of immediately trying to silence uncomfortable feelings, learning to recognize what your body is communicating can create opportunities for understanding and healing.
When anxiety shows up as anger, withdrawal, or panic, partners can easily misunderstand each other's reactions. Real connection begins when we replace judgment with curiosity, learn to regulate ourselves, and support each other through difficult emotions.
You don't have to eliminate discomfort to feel safe. Sometimes, healing begins when you learn how to move through it.
The next time anxiety or anger shows up during a difficult conversation with your partner, pause and ask:
“What is my body trying to tell me right now?”
Notice the tension, racing thoughts, or physical sensations underneath your reaction.
Instead of immediately defending yourself or trying to fix your partner, ask:
“What would help us feel safe and supported in this moment?”
Try a small grounding practice together, whether it's taking a break, holding something warm, or simply sitting quietly.
Give yourselves permission to settle before returning to the conversation.
Remember, you don't have to solve the conflict while your nervous systems are overwhelmed.
Sometimes the most meaningful repair begins when you stop fighting the feeling and start understanding what's underneath it.
