Nostalgia is one of the strangest emotions we can experience. It is a longing for the past, especially for a time or place associated with happy memories, accompanied by a sense of sadness for what has been lost. One has the feeling that the core of one’s existence is touched. Nostalgia is remarkably common, with many experiencing it at least once a week. Most people regularly take nostalgic trips down memory lane. Nostalgia, in fact, has become a defining feature of the 21st-century zeitgeist. Yet people often find it difficult to say what exactly they yearn for. Nostalgia points to something deeper than particular events in our past, our longing for childhood may be a longing for a different mode of experiencing reality, one characterised by wonder, joy, play, innocence, and timelessness. As we grow up, the door to this world begins to close. Nostalgia, however, give us fleeting glimpses into this lost paradise, reminding us to continue our search for the silver key, not through a regression into the womb, but by recovering what was valuable in childhood on a higher level of consciousness. For this reason, it is important to know our life story, and especially our childhood. Our earliest memories, even when fictionalised, may reveal something about our personal myth. But ultimately, we must transcend even ourselves. The deepest longing expressed through nostalgia is not simply for yesterday, but for home. The beginning of homecoming is to remember the soul, and the final homecoming is the union of the soul with God. Nostalgia begins with the longing to go back. Homecoming, however, requires us to go forward.
