Navigating nutrition information while living with diabetes can be challenging. From understanding the role of carbohydrates and sugar to navigating dietary trends, online claims and emerging concepts like diabetes remission, conflicting advice and evolving nutrition and diabetes messages can make it difficult to know what to trust. Beyond the science, everyday realities such as food affordability, cultural traditions, and stigma can further complicate food choices and diabetes management. Laura Syron is the President and CEO of Diabetes Canada, the country’s largest charitable organization working to improve the quality of life of people living with diabetes. She currently also serves at the Board Chair for Health Charities Coalition of Canada. As someone who lives with type 2 diabetes, Laura is a fierce advocate for elevating the stories and voices of the more than 4 million people diagnosed with diabetes in Canada. Dr. Laura Chiavaroli is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and Affiliate Scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital. She leads a research program that addresses the important implementation gap between guidelines-based nutrition therapy for diabetes and cardiovascular disease and effective strategies to mobilize them, while also addressing the equity gap. In this episode Dr. Chiavaroli and Ms. Syron discuss common misconceptions about nutrition and diabetes, the challenges of navigating conflicting information, and how evidence-based nutrition guidance can better support people living with diabetes.
