Recruiting and retaining great property managers has become one of the biggest challenges facing our industry. With increasing workloads, changing expectations and burnout continuing to drive experienced professionals away, I think it's time we rethink how we're building and supporting our teams. I’m joined by Samantha Fisher from Ray White, who brings nearly 20 years of property management experience and valuable insight into recruitment, retention and workplace culture. Together, we explore why traditional staffing models aren't always working and what business owners can do differently to create workplaces where people genuinely want to stay.
One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation is the importance of recognising individual strengths rather than expecting every property manager to do everything. We unpack how more specialised roles, better onboarding, meaningful training and the right administrative support can help reduce pressure while improving performance. We also discuss the growing importance of flexibility, leadership and emotional intelligence, particularly when managing the expectations of both landlords and tenants. It's a reminder that retaining good people isn't simply about offering a higher salary, but about creating an environment where they feel understood, supported and able to do their best work.
What I particularly loved about this conversation was the shift towards seeing property management as a long-term career with genuine opportunities for growth, leadership and even business ownership. We talk about looking beyond traditional recruitment pathways, investing in people with the right attitude and giving team members a clearer vision of their future in the industry.
