Psalm 53: The View From Heaven Looking Down
The fool says in his heart there is no God, and the psalmist does not argue with him. He simply shifts the camera angle. Imagine the view from above: God himself leaning forward, looking down upon the whole muddled race of men to see if there were any — even one — who understood, who sought him. The answer comes back empty. Every one of them has gone back; they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. It is one of the bleakest inventories in Scripture, and yet the psalm does not end in despair. It ends in longing. "Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion!" That cry is the tiny green shoot in the scorched field — the proof that at least one heart has not gone back, that at least one voice still knows what it is missing. The fool says there is no God, but the psalmist says something far more interesting: where is he? And the very asking is already the beginning of the answer.
