Psalm 51: The Only Sacrifice He Ever Wanted
This is the psalm David wrote after the worst thing he ever did, and that is precisely what makes it the most honest prayer in the Bible. He does not explain himself, does not offer context, does not mention Bathsheba by name. He simply says: I have sinned, and my sin is always in front of me, and I cannot get clean on my own. What follows is not groveling but something far more remarkable — a request for creation. "Create in me a clean heart, O God." Not repair, not improve, but create, as if the old one were past mending and only the same power that spoke the stars into being could manage this. And then the turn that unlocks the whole psalm: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise." David, who could have brought a thousand bulls to the altar, discovers that what God has been waiting for all along is the one thing no one else can offer on your behalf — the honest weight of your own shattered heart, laid down without pretense.
