Psalm 49: The One Thing Money Cannot Buy
This psalm takes the whole world into its confidence — "Hear this, all ye people… both low and high, rich and poor, together." The news the psalmist has to share concerns them equally, because it concerns the one line no one can cross with a checkbook. "None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him." The wealthy man, the wise man, even the fool — each arrives at the same grave and leaves his estate to someone who did not earn it. It sounds like the bleakest of all sermons, until the sudden, quiet pivot at the middle: "But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me." What the richest man in the world cannot purchase, God simply does, gratis. Which leaves the reader with a strange comfort and a stranger warning: the man with the lands named after him looks impressive today, but the grave is coming; and the one who has been ransomed, though he may own nothing, owns the only thing that lasts.
