Live from the Les siestes Teriaki festival, at the Royal Abbey of L'Épau in the French city of Le Mans.
It is difficult to think of another 12th-century writer whose work has had as lasting an influence as Hildegard's. The Ukrainian duo Heinali & Andriana-Yaroslava, aka Saienko, are longtime admirers of the abbess's poems and mystical compositions, and use her figure as a distant mirror to reflect on, process, and transcend their wartime experiences. This program is a reimagining of Hildegard's music. It combines the vocal sound production approaches of authentic Ukrainian folk singing with modular synthesis techniques drawn from early medieval polyphony and monophony. Oleh Shpudeiko, aka Heinali, is a composer and sound artist who has spent the past few years reimagining early music using his custom-made modular systems, notably on his 2020 album 'MADRIGALS'.
"O Ignis Spiritus Paracliti" is an energetic, impetuous, and ardent prayer for life. The composition unfolds slowly, moving from gentle drones to a monumental wave of sound that engulfs the finale.
The colder, more contemplative composition "O Tu Suavissima Virga," humming in a murmurando style, pays homage to the Virgin Mary. Bass drones provide the foundation for Saienko's vocals, which evolve with solemnity and concentration.
