Knock Knock Eye: The Weirdest Eye Questi...

About this episode

In this episode I answer some of the most frequently asked—and occasionally bizarre—questions I get as an ophthalmologist. From whether chlamydia can spread from the eyes to the genitals, to why you should never rub your eyes too hard, I dive into everyday eye concerns with humor and expertise.

Takeaways:

Pink Eye vs. Conjunctivitis: Pink eye is a lay term often used for infectious conjunctivitis, but conjunctivitis encompasses a wide range of causes, including allergies, autoimmune conditions, and irritants.

The Danger of Overwearing Contacts: Wearing contacts for too long can lead to microabrasions and severe dry eye, which may make it impossible to wear them comfortably in the future.

Eye Rubbing Risks: Excessive eye rubbing can cause permanent corneal changes or even optic neuropathy in extreme cases. Gentle rubbing is okay, but moderation is key.

Retinal Detachment in High Myopes: People with severe nearsightedness (high myopia) are at a greater risk of retinal detachment and should avoid high-impact activities or seek medical care if experiencing flashes, floaters, or a curtain over their vision.

UV Light Protection for Cataracts: While cataracts are inevitable with age, wearing UV-blocking sunglasses can help slow their progression and reduce the risk of other eye conditions like macular degeneration and eyelid cancers.
