Too often when we talk about issues that affect women in the workplace it sounds like concepts that belong in a textbook, or something that previous generations had to deal with when the reality is many of us (yes, I said us) perpetuate these same biases even today.
In this epic I dive into one of the top challenges women face when it comes to diversity. It’s unconscious bias! I seek to demystify unconscious bias and help you identify possible scenarios that you can relate to. I also share some examples of my experiences.
Highlights
There are three types of unconscious bias that we explore in this episode. Here’s some insight on them:
Stereotyping
Women are often stereotyped as emotional or irrational, which can lead to their ideas being dismissed or undervalued in the workplace. Research shows that gender bias is a key reason why women are underrepresented in leadership roles.
Microaggression
Microaggressions are subtle but hurtful actions or comments that can be based on unconscious biases, such as being talked over or interrupted in a meeting, or dealing with mansplaining from a male colleague.
Unequal Treatment
This shows up as a lack of diversity in the workplace, being paid less than male colleagues for the same work, or being passed over for promotions in favor of less qualified male candidates.
