Have you ever considered that you may actually be addicted to stress? That underneath all the complaining about being busy and feelings of frustration about always being pulled in multiple directions gives you a high like no other? Stacey shares some of the behaviours that may be early indicators that you are developing a stress addiction.
Stress can be a motivating factor for some people, and it can give us a sense of purpose or drive in our daily lives. However, prolonged exposure to stress can lead to negative consequences for our physical and mental health.
There are scientific reasons why you may feel addicted to stress. When we experience stress, our body releases cortisol, a hormone that prepares us for a "fight or flight" response. This can make us feel more alert, focused, and energized. Over time, our brain can start to associate stress with these positive feelings and may seek out situations that cause stress as a way to replicate those feelings.
However, chronic stress can also lead to negative physical and mental health outcomes, such as cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety, and burnout. It's important to find a healthy balance between stress and relaxation to maintain our overall well-being.
There are ways to break the cycle of addiction to stress. One strategy is to identify the sources of stress in your life and make a plan to manage them more effectively. This may involve setting boundaries, delegating tasks, or seeking support from others. Additionally, engaging in activities that promote relaxation, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies, can help to counteract the effects of stress.
