EP11: Understanding, Recognizing, and De...

Wave Podcast Network
About this episode

Sarah Rice and Therapy Jeff are talking about that old classic, anxiety. Jeff provides a useful explanation of the actual science behind how anxiety works in your brain and what you can do to help yourself work through it when it feels like anxiety is really taking over. Sarah breaks down the ways that physiological, cognitive, and emotional responses can feed and be fed by anxiety. Jeff has some strategies for recognizing early subtle signs of oncoming anxiety. Sarah talks about grounding as a really helpful way to manage anxiety in the moment. Jeff and Sarah trade their favorite grounding exercises, from doing semi-complicated mental math to five-finger breathing. Remember though, no matter how you get there, when it comes to anxiety, your main goal is to convince your brain that it's safe. This episode is chock full of great ways to think through and about anxiety.

Sarah recommends Bruce D. Perry and Oprah Winfrey's book What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing. The audiobook is especially good!
