76. Is Stannous Fluoride the Unicorn of ...

Dental Digest Institute & Dr. Melissa Seibert: Dentist
About this episode

In this episode, we'll analyze the science surrounding stannous fluoride and Sodium Fluoride. We'll evaluate why stannous fluoride is a particularly powerful fluoride.

Remember when you were in dental school and you had a cariology course? I mean I don’t know about you, but a very short portion of my dental school curriculum was devoted to  cariology and  oral hygiene instructions. I initially learned about fluoride’s mechanism of action the very first month i was in dental school, and honestly, my professor Dr. Metz gave me an incredible basis. But then sadly, that was really the last I heard of it.

Fluoride is actually an incredible chemical. It has revolutionized dentistry. I think fluoride is to dentistry what vaccines are to modern medicine. What other compound has entirely changed the dental landscape?  This episode is going to do what we do best on the podcast, we’ll uncover the science behind fluoride and even more specifically, the swiss army knife of fluoride, stannous fluoride. We’ll also clear up some misconceptions related to stannous fluoride. Here with us today is chemical engineer Dr. Samuel St John and board certified prosthodontist Dr. Ward Noble. We’ll unpack the hidden story of stannous fluoride.
