A man is found dead from a bullet wound on a train to London and Scotland Yard is unable to piece together how it happened. This is one of Doyle's first murder mysteries and one of the few which does not include Sherlock Holmes. "The Story of the Man with the Watches" (1898)
It was collected in Doyle's Round the Fire Stories (1908) and Tales of Terror and Mystery (1922). The story concerns the appearance of a dead man in a railway carriage, with six pocket watches in his jacket.
