He was one of the most well-liked individuals in Carthage. Bernie met Marjorie Nugent when he presided over her husband's funeral in 1990. This encounter began a strange relationship that progressed from Bernie working for Marjorie and moving into her house to Bernie killing Marjorie and spending much of her vast fortune.
