This is Day 4 of Happiness Habits—episode #2610.
So far this week, we've made room for joy, practiced receiving the good, and used the breath to soften tension and return to the present moment.
Today, we turn toward the way we use our energy.
The theme is Protect.
Happiness is not only about adding more pleasant experiences. Sometimes it also means protecting your time, attention, and energy from what repeatedly drains them.
My attention is worth protecting.
In today's meditation, you'll practice Prana Mudra.
To form the mudra, gently touch the tips of the little finger and ring finger to the tip of the thumb. Allow the index and middle fingers to extend comfortably.
Use the gesture as a quiet reminder to gather your energy around what matters.
You'll practice:
settling into the breath and body
forming Prana Mudra gently
noticing where your energy has been scattered or depleted
becoming aware of what genuinely nourishes you
identifying one boundary that could create more space for joy
choosing where you want your attention to go today
You do not have to give your energy to everything that asks for it.
My attention is worth protecting.
As you move through the meditation, ask:
What reliably nourishes my confidence, energy, or sense of possibility?
Then consider:
What boundary could protect a little more space for what matters to me?
Your boundary does not have to be dramatic.
It might simply be deciding when to put your phone away, declining something that does not fit, or giving yourself uninterrupted time for something you love.
Attention is limited.
When it is constantly divided between notifications, obligations, worries, and other people's priorities, it becomes harder to notice what actually restores or energizes us.
Creating small boundaries around your attention can make it easier to experience more presence and satisfaction.
Protecting your energy is not about shutting life out.
It is about becoming more intentional about what you let in.
Mudras have long been used in meditation as physical gestures of intention and awareness.
Today, Prana Mudra becomes a reminder to gather rather than scatter your energy.
Let the gesture bring you back to a simple question:
What is worthy of my attention?
Not everything needs an immediate response.
Not every thought needs to be followed.
Not every demand needs to become your priority.
During today's meditation, you'll:
Arrive: Feel your body supported and notice your natural breathing.
Form: Gently bring your hands into Prana Mudra.
Notice: Become aware of what has been draining your attention or energy.
Remember: Bring to mind something that makes you feel alive, capable, or connected.
Protect: Identify one small boundary that could support more of that feeling.
Choose: Decide what deserves your attention today.
Continue: Carry that intention with you as you move back into your day.
Repeat slowly:
My attention is worth protecting.
I may choose where my energy goes.
I can make more space for what nourishes me.
And finally:
I protect my energy for what matters most.
Sometimes happiness grows because you add something beautiful to your life.
And sometimes it grows because you stop giving so much attention to what drains you.
A little less scrolling.
A little less comparison.
One fewer unnecessary obligation.
A quiet hour.
A conversation that leaves you feeling more like yourself.
Protecting space for happiness can be a practice of its own.
Dear Friend,
Your attention is one of the most valuable things you have.
Where it goes, your energy often follows.
Today, notice what leaves you feeling more open, hopeful, connected, or alive.
Then notice what consistently leaves you depleted.
You do not have to change everything at once.
Just protect one small pocket of your day.
Give it to something that matters to you.
That is enough.
With care,
Mary
Before bed, think of one moment today when you protected your energy or attention.
Maybe you put your phone away.
Maybe you said no.
Maybe you chose a peaceful conversation over an unnecessary argument.
Maybe you gave yourself time to rest.
Notice how that choice felt.
Then repeat softly:
My attention is worth protecting.
Ask yourself:
What reliably nourishes my confidence, energy, or sense of possibility?
Then ask:
What boundary could protect a little more space for that today?
Take one slow breath and repeat:
I may choose where my energy goes.
Choose one small thing today simply because it makes you happy.
You might:
put your phone away while you eat
protect 20 minutes for something you love
say no to one unnecessary obligation
spend time with someone who lifts your energy
step away from a conversation that drains you
make space for music, movement, creativity, or rest
give one enjoyable activity your full attention
Happiness often needs a little room to grow.
The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin
One of the useful questions behind a happiness project is simple:
What genuinely makes life better for you?
Today, take that question one step further.
Once you know what nourishes you, consider how you can protect more room for it.
Small boundaries can become powerful happiness habits.
Choose one simple way to protect your attention today:
silence unnecessary notifications
create a short phone-free period
take one task off your list
pause before automatically saying yes
schedule time for something you enjoy
notice when your energy begins to drop and respond with care
Your energy does not have to be available to everything.
