Florian Zemmin is a German Professor of Islamic Studies at Freie Universität Berlin, where he has taught since 2021. Since October 2023, he has directed the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies. His research explores the intersections of Islam, modernity, religion, secularism, and social theory and how these concepts acquire different meanings across historical and cultural contexts. His monograph Modernity in Islamic Tradition: The Concept of ‘Society’ in the Journal al-Manar (Cairo, 1898–1940) examines how Islamic intellectuals conceptualized society and modernity. He has also studied the seventeenth-century Ottoman intellectual Kātib Çelebi through the lens of Max Weber’s sociology. Through his scholarship, Zemmin contributes to global and postcolonial approaches to Islamic Studies and challenges assumptions that modernity and secularism can be understood exclusively through Western historical experience. He co-edited Postcolonialism and Social Theory in Arabic (2024), exploring the historical entanglements of Arab intellectual traditions and social theory. He also co-edited Global Secularity: A Sourcebook, including a volume devoted to the Middle East and North Africa (2024).
