Psalm 84: The Sparrow Who Found a House
The psalm's most astonishing detail is one most readers rush past: somewhere in the temple of the living God, a sparrow has found a house, and a swallow has built a nest, and nobody has chased them out. They have laid their young on the altars — the very altars! — and the psalmist does not consider this a scandal but a glory. If a bird so small and so common can find a home in the courts of the Lord of hosts, then perhaps even I can. Pilgrims walking toward this place pass through the valley of Baca — the valley of weeping — and, remarkably, they dig wells there. Their tears become springs for whoever comes after. "A day in thy courts," the psalm says, "is better than a thousand." And then, lest we miss how radical the preference is: I would rather be a doorkeeper here — just a man holding a door — than the reigning prince of anywhere else. Sparrow, pilgrim, doorkeeper. The psalm blesses all of them. It blesses anyone small enough to want in.
