"Whatever you do... don't fall asleep." We watched "A Nightmare on Elm Street" with our friend Gabe Muñoz, and we've been having trouble sleeping lately. Of the '80s slasher icons, Fred Krueger holds a special place in our dark and spooky hearts. Freddy is a real comeback queen— and not solely based on the sheer number of sequels. As the series progresses, Freddy is always there with a sassy comeback, but in this first entry, he's darker and more sinister. Wes Craven wrote and directed this splatter horror classic based on a pastiche of personal memories and ripped from the headlines unexplained deaths. Krueger was meant to be a one-off monster in a standalone film, but the movie was a hit, and there were dollar signs in everyone's eyes, leading to a ton of sequels. But as a singular horror story, the original "A Nightmare on Elm Street" stands alone as a spooky, moody, and viscerally scary horror classic.
