Barry Hearn OBE built Matchroom from a £100 company into a global sports empire worth well over £1 billion. He is the son of a bus driver from an Essex council estate, a chartered accountant by training, and a promoter for more than 50 years across snooker, darts, boxing and pool. His son has left for Monaco. Barry is staying. In this conversation with Brogan Garrit-Smith he makes his case: that Britain is governed by the politics of envy, and the people who build things are being treated as easy targets; that the millionaires who have already left are not coming back, and nobody is replacing them; that a working-class saver can now face up to 67% tax on a pension and another 40% when they die; that Great Britain Limited is borrowing too much and failing at the very top; that he nearly lost everything before Sky TV arrived like the cavalry; that he missed his son's birth to win £50 at snooker; and that the only thing he really fears is his wife.We have been told Britain is still a place where anyone can build something.Says Who?He explains:1. Why he says Britain runs on the politics of envy, and what it is doing to the next generation2. Why he says the people who have left will not be coming back3. What he says a Martian would make of the British tax system4. What a £50 snooker game taught him about the price of winning5. Why he says money buys you the freedom to tell the truth6. Why, with every reason to leave, he is stayingAnd a bonus: Barry predicts Joshua vs Fury, and the round he thinks it ends!0:00 Trailer/Intro1:01 The numbers will frighten you2:02 The world of politics of envy3:00 Dumbing down society4:11 They won't be coming back5:24 My wife's got a dog7:02 A £100 company8:44 Not leaving the office until I've sent an invoice11:13 Bad news is not to be shared13:00 I missed Eddie's birth for £5013:33 Unbeatable, but you've got to kill me15:20 Are you a billionaire, Barry?16:44 Your candle will burn longer19:31 Explaining British tax to a Martian21:37 Great Britain Limited23:04 A dirty grey wall that says The End23:25 The first time I voted Reform23:54 You wouldn't appoint her, even on Mars26:13 Retired for six weeks30:16 Sky came over the hill like the cavalry31:08 We nearly doubled the business in COVID32:02 Boxing in the back garden34:11 Elocution lessons and Bertolt Brecht36:18 I hit him very hard and he didn't go down37:27 When the man upstairs is ready, I'm ready40:19 Telling the truth is a luxury45:15 Joshua vs Fury46:17 I don't draw any money, I buy farms50:47 Three heart attacks52:01 Is it harder to build in Britain?57:09 Born in England, I'll die in England57:32 What I took away from BarrySays Who? with Brogan Garrit-Smith.
