In the first of two parts on Islam and politics with Prof. Mohsen Kadivar, we ask what politics is and whether Islam has a political ideology. We explore prophetic authority and political power, the Islamic State, armed resistance and terrorism, and the status of the kafir. Starting from what politics means in the age of the nation state, Kadivar separates religious and cultural authority from political power, defends secularism as the separation of religious institutions from the state, and argues that faith cannot be imposed by force and that terror is haram in Islam Prof. Mohsen Kadivar is Research Professor of Islamic Studies at Duke University and author of many books and papers on Islamic political thought, including Human Rights and Reformist Islam.
