Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed El' Deity Princey.
She discusses how individuals can recognize when they are being controlled by obligations, expectations, and unhealthy dependencies rather than truly directing their own lives. The conversation centered on creating "structural freedom," building sustainable success, and aligning life choices with personal purpose rather than external expectations.
Interview Summary
El'Deity Princey joined Money Making Conversations Master Class to discuss her books, Monetize a Mind That's Colonized and The Pressure of Being the Stabilizer. Throughout the conversation, she challenged listeners to ask themselves a powerful question:
"Do you run things, or are things running you?"
Princey explained that many successful people, entrepreneurs, executives, and employees often believe they are in control when they are actually trapped by the very systems they have created. They become the person everyone depends on, carrying the pressure of constantly solving problems, making decisions, and keeping everything functioning.
Rushion shared lessons from his own corporate and entrepreneurial journey, including how he learned that being indispensable can sometimes create stress, distrust, and burnout. Princey responded by explaining that true leadership is not about carrying everything yourself. It is about creating systems that function effectively even when you are absent.
The interview also explored how society conditions people to pursue careers, relationships, and lifestyles based on other people's expectations. Princey revealed that after earning degrees and securing a successful career as a therapist, she realized that while she appeared successful on paper, she was not fulfilled internally. That realization led her to develop frameworks that help people align their work, time, and energy with their authentic desires.
A key theme throughout the conversation was the difference between being an "operator" and an "allocator." Operators manage everything personally, while allocators build systems, trust people, and create freedom to enjoy life while maintaining success.
Key Takeaways 1. Ask Yourself: Do You Run Things or Do Things Run You?
Many people believe they are in control, but their schedules, responsibilities, and obligations may actually be controlling them.
2. Success Without Freedom Is Incomplete
Achieving financial or professional success means little if you do not have the time and freedom to enjoy your life.
3. Competency Creates Dependency
The more capable you are, the more people and systems tend to rely on you. Without boundaries, competence can become a burden.
4. Stop Being the Stabilizer for Everything
Many high achievers become the person everyone depends on. Over time, that role creates pressure, exhaustion, and resentment.
5. Build Systems, Not Dependency
True leadership creates structures and processes that continue operating effectively without constant supervision.
6. External Success Does Not Guarantee Internal Happiness
A great job, impressive credentials, and financial stability do not automatically create fulfillment.
7. Stop Living Someone Else's Script
Many people pursue goals based on family expectations, social conditioning, or cultural definitions of success instead of their own desires.
8. Structural Freedom Is the Goal
The ability to choose how you spend your time is one of the greatest measures of success.
9. Sustainable Success Requires Growth
As opportunities increase, people must expand their systems, habits, and support structures to handle new levels of responsibility.
10. Small Changes Can Create Big Breakthroughs
Princey encouraged listeners to start by saying "no" to one recurring demand and observe how their lives begin to shift.
Memorable Quotes
"Do you run things, or are things running you?"
"Just because it works doesn't mean it works for you."
"Competency breeds dependency."
"The most qualified person is often carrying the most pressure."
"Life is meant to be enjoyed."
"Most people are managing overload and calling it leadership."
"Success brings increased attention, opportunity, and responsibility."
"Who were you before they told you who you were?"
"You have a compass. You know exactly what lights you up."
"Stop being the operator and become the allocator."
Final Thoughts
El'Deity Princey delivered a thought-provoking conversation about redefining success and reclaiming personal freedom. Her message challenged listeners to move beyond societal expectations and evaluate whether their achievements are creating fulfillment or simply generating more pressure. By building systems, trusting others, and aligning decisions with personal values, individuals can create a life that is not only successful but sustainable. The interview was a powerful reminder that true wealth includes time, freedom, peace of mind, and the ability to live according to your own purpose rather than someone else's expectations.
