Can you imagine actually having to pull an entire plank out of your eye? The image is jarring on purpose. Jesus had a way of turning things upside down and bringing people down from their high horses with a single, vivid picture — and the plank in Matthew 7:3-5 is one of His most effective. Whenever someone begins pulling us into a conversation about another person's failures, or we start sizing up someone else's choices, that image has a way of reorienting us almost immediately. We all have a giant, splintered board hanging right out of our own eye. Maybe others can even see it. We often cannot.
Matthew 7 is the final chapter of the Sermon on the Mount, and it opens with one of Jesus' most quoted and most misapplied teachings: do not judge, or you too will be judged. This is not a call to silence discernment or pretend wrong things are fine. It is an honest acknowledgment that righteous judgment belongs to Jesus alone — established throughout Scripture from James 4:12 to John 5:22. What Jesus is asking of us in this chapter is actually a full and demanding agenda: stop judging, pray persistently, treat others following the Golden Rule, choose the narrow road, avoid false teachers, and build our lives on the solid rock of His example. The plank metaphor is the arresting opening to that entire list — a call to refocus on the one job that is actually ours: staying humbly and honestly tethered to Jesus and His ways. That is hard enough work for a lifetime without spending our energy on everyone else's specks.
Bible Verse
"First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."
— Matthew 7:5, NIV
Ponder Today
A Prayer for You Today
Jesus, thank You for the jolting image of pulling an entire plank out of my own eye. It hurts just to think of it. Thank You for teaching me that judging a speck in anyone else's eye is not within my right or ability. I love that You follow up Your admonition with an image of kindness — that once I take the plank out of my own eye, only then can I clearly see to help someone else. Please keep drawing me to You through the narrow gate, prompting me to show mercy to myself and others daily. I lay any tendency toward judgment down and commit to aligning my own walk with Yours. Thank You for showing us all how to live and love. In Your precious name, Amen.
