Title: Hold the Trains
Level: Upper-Intermediate (B2-C1)
Description
Halifax, Nova Scotia, December 1917. Telegraph operator Duncan Reardon is having an ordinary morning at the Richmond railway yard when a breathless policeman bursts in with terrible news: a burning ship in the harbor is packed with explosives, and nobody can stop it from drifting toward the docks.
With only minutes left, Duncan realizes a crowded passenger train is about to roll straight into the blast zone — and the only way to stop it is to stay at his telegraph key, sending the one message that could save hundreds of strangers. He sends his young apprentice away to safety and makes a choice that will change his life, and the lives of everyone on that train.
Hold the Trains is a tense, emotional historical story inspired by the real Halifax Explosion, written for upper-intermediate and advanced English learners. It follows one ordinary man's extraordinary courage through the disaster and its aftermath, and closes with a clear, hard-won ending about what a single message can accomplish.
