What if better sleep begins not with forcing yourself to relax, but with creating a few simple cues that help you feel safe enough to let go?

In Day 7 of Sleep Better & Quiet Your Mind | 7 Days of Bedtime Meditation, we bring the week together and focus on creating a personal bedtime ritual you can return to again and again.
Tonight's theme is Embody.
The goal is not perfect sleep.
The goal is to know your way back to rest.
Over the past week, we've explored several ways to make bedtime feel calmer and more supportive:
Tonight, you'll notice which of these practices helped you feel most settled and choose one or two to keep using.
The intention is simple:
Create a bedtime ritual that feels familiar, gentle, and easy to repeat.
It does not need to be elaborate.
It might be:
a hand over your heart,
one slow breath,
feeling the bed beneath you,
or repeating:
For this moment, I am safe to rest.
Consistent bedtime routines can help create a clearer transition between daytime activity and sleep.
Repeated cues such as lower light, less stimulation, quiet breathing, and familiar phrases can become associated with winding down.
The important thing is consistency, not complexity.
A simple ritual you actually use is often more helpful than an elaborate one you rarely follow.
Contemplative traditions emphasize returning rather than performing perfectly.
The mind wanders.
You return.
Tension appears.
You soften.
Restlessness comes.
You come back to the breath, the body, and the present moment.
The practice is not to never lose your sense of calm.
It is to become familiar with the path back.
You'll move gently through the practices from the week:
Release:
"This can wait until tomorrow."
Ground:
"I am here now."
Protect:
"This time belongs to rest."
Nurture:
"I can meet myself with kindness."
Balance:
"I do not need to stay alert when I am safe enough to rest."
Then choose the phrase or practice that feels most supportive to you.
Repeat slowly:
The day is complete enough.
Nothing needs my attention right now.
I am here now.
I am allowed to protect my rest.
I can meet myself with kindness.
I do not need to stay alert when I am safe enough to rest.
And finally:
You do not have to master sleep.
You only need a way to return.
A familiar breath.
A reassuring phrase.
A simple ritual.
Something that tells you:
The day is over. You can rest now.
Dear Friend,
As we close this week, I hope you take one simple practice with you.
Not a perfect routine.
Not another list of things you have to do correctly.
Just one cue that helps you soften.
One phrase that helps you feel supported.
One small ritual that reminds you that the day is done.
You already know the way back.
Notice.
Soften.
Return.
With love,
Mary
Before sleep, ask yourself:
Which practice from this week helped me feel safest and most settled?
Then choose one bedtime cue you want to keep.
And repeat:
