Agatha Christie's The Plymouth Express Affair (first published in 1923) is one of Hercule Poirot's early and tightly‑plotted murder mysteries. The story begins when a young naval officer discovers the body of a woman hidden beneath a seat aboard the Plymouth Express train. The victim is Florence Halliday (also known as Mrs. Rupert Carrington), daughter of wealthy American steel magnate Ebenezer Halliday. She had been traveling to a weekend house party carrying jewels worth a small fortune — jewels that are now missing.
Halliday summons Poirot, who quickly realizes that the case involves more than a simple robbery. Florence's estranged husband Rupert Carrington, deep in gambling debt, appears to have motive. So does Count de la Rochefour, a charming but unscrupulous adventurer who once courted Florence and recently attempted to rekindle the romance. Both men seem plausible suspects — yet Poirot suspects that the truth lies in the details of Florence's last train journey, her sudden change of plans at Bristol, and the testimony of her maid, Jane Mason.
Christie's clever misdirection shines here: the killer hides in plain sight, disguised as a witness, while stronger suspects distract the reader. The story is a classic example of Christie's early mastery of the "false trail" and her ability to conceal the culprit within the ordinary.
Classic Christie Misdirection: Multiple suspects, each with motive, yet the real killer is quietly embedded in the narrative.
Greed & Deception: Jewel theft, financial desperation, and romantic manipulation drive the plot.
Poirot's Method: Attention to tiny inconsistencies, witness behavior, and the psychology of disguise.
Early Poirot Style: This story shows Christie experimenting with techniques she later perfected.
Published early in Christie's career, The Plymouth Express Affair demonstrates her growing confidence with train‑based mysteries, intricate disguises, and the interplay between social class and crime. It also foreshadows later classics like Murder on the Orient Express.
Opening Hook: The shocking discovery aboard the Plymouth Express.
