Psalm 46: The River in the Middle of the Earthquake
Luther sang this psalm on the worst days of his life, and it is easy to see why. The whole earth can be coming apart — mountains sliding into the sea, waters roaring, kingdoms shaking — and yet the poet looks up and sees, impossibly, a river. Not a wild river like the one drowning the world outside, but a quiet one, running through the city of God, making glad the place where he dwells. Somehow, at the still center of every catastrophe, there is this water flowing. And then the voice from within the stillness: "Be still, and know that I am God." It is not a soothing whisper — it is almost a command. Stop scrambling. Stop trying to hold the mountains up yourself. The one holding them is also holding you.
