AI researcher Jacob Coxon quit his job at Anthropic last week and became a whistleblower, warning that the race toward superintelligent AI is "gambling with our lives." Another Anthropic employee, Evan Hubinger, backed him up, putting the odds of AI apocalypse within a decade at over 10%. Then, Anthropic published a 154-page AI safety report on all sorts of alarming ways the technology is evolving.
Anthropic was founded as an AI-safety-conscious competitor to OpenAI. It’s company culture is heavily influenced by effective altruism, a utilitarian philosophy that attempts to optimize the wellbeing of the entire planet and every future person yet to be born.
So, should these dark predictions be taken seriously, or are they the ravings of paranoid ideologues? And our the panicked response, will we end up running head-first into a government regulation disaster?
