Our narrator visits his friend Lionel Dacre, a wealthy eccentric living in Paris whose home has become a museum of occult books, rare curiosities, and artifacts tied to the supernatural. Dacre's tastes "lean toward the marvellous and the monstrous," and among his collection sits a strange object: a large, black, brass‑rimmed leather funnel, hardened with age and scarred around its narrow neck.
Dacre believes that certain objects retain the emotional imprint of extreme human experience — joy, terror, agony — and that these impressions can be transmitted through dreams. To test his theory, he asks the narrator to sleep with the funnel beside him.
Skeptical but intrigued, the narrator agrees.
What follows is one of Doyle's most chilling sequences: a vivid dream of a vaulted chamber, judges in black velvet hats, a trembling priest, and a proud, pale woman with childlike blue eyes. She is bound to a wooden torture device — the "Extraordinary Question" — as buckets of water and a leather funnel are prepared for the brutal water torture of Louis XIV's era.
The narrator awakens screaming, shaken by the horror of what he has witnessed.
Dacre then reveals the truth: The funnel once belonged to Marie Madeleine d'Aubray, Marquise de Brinvilliers, one of France's most infamous poisoners — executed in 1676 after being condemned for murdering her father and brothers. The dream was not fantasy, but a psychic echo of her torture before execution.
Doyle blends historical fact with supernatural suggestion, creating a tale where the past bleeds into the present through a single object.
