Today's episode explores one of the least discussed chapters in the history of twentieth-century colonialism: the genocide carried out by Fascist Italy in eastern Libya between 1929 and 1934.
In Genocide in Libya: Shar, a Hidden Colonial History, Ali Abdullatif Ahmida examines Italy's campaign to crush anti-colonial resistance in Cyrenaica, during which tens of thousands of Libyans died through forced displacement, executions, starvation, and imprisonment in concentration camps.
But this is more than a history of colonial violence. Ahmida asks why a genocide of this scale has remained largely absent from public memory. He explores how the destruction of evidence, the enduring myth of "moderate" Italian Fascism, and the marginalization of Libyan voices helped obscure one of the twentieth century's major colonial crimes.
