Psalm Chapter 144

About this episode

Psalm 144: From Thunder to Harvest

This psalm begins with a warrior and ends with a farmer, and the distance between them is the whole of human longing. David opens by blessing the God who trains his hands for battle, and then — in a swerve that catches you off guard — asks the most disarming question in Scripture: "Lord, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him?" Here is the king, the giant-slayer, the man after God's own heart, and he is genuinely baffled that the Almighty bothers with creatures whose days pass like shadows. Then comes the storm: bow thy heavens, touch the mountains, cast forth lightning. But the psalm does not end in thunder. It ends in a vision of sons growing like young plants, daughters like polished cornerstones, garners full, sheep multiplying, oxen strong, and no complaining in the streets. The final word is not victory but happiness — the quiet, domestic, unglamorous happiness of a people whose God is the Lord. As if the whole point of the battle was always to get home.

Psalm 145: David's Last PraiseThis is the only psalm the tradition labels simply "David's Psalm of praise" — as if all the others were merely working up to this one. And what David praises is not what you might expect from a king looking back on a life of battles and betrayals. H ... Show More

Psalm 143: The Soul That Thirsts Like Dry GroundThere is a moment in this psalm where theology gives way to pure physical longing: "I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land." Not as a thirsty man — that would be desperate enough — but as ... Show More
