President Donald Trump said he is open to the possibility of temporarily withdrawing Todd Blanche’s nomination as attorney general amid opposition from two Republican senators, suggesting he could renominate his pick after those lawmakers departed office.
Trump’s comments come amid a delay in the confirmation process for Blanche, currently serving as the acting attorney general, to take the role on a permanent basis.
Republican Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas are demanding written guarantees that plans for a $1.8 billion fund to pay victims of alleged government weaponization are being scrapped. They also want assurances that a provision in a legal settlement giving Trump, members of his family and his businesses immunity from past Internal Revenue Service audits would not apply to third parties. Trump reached a settlement with the IRS over leaks of his tax information in 2019.
