On July 24, 1948, two experienced Eastern Air Lines pilots reported a terrifying encounter in the skies above Alabama. A glowing, wingless object—described as torpedo-shaped with illuminated windows and flames shooting from its rear—raced toward their passenger plane before narrowly missing it and disappearing into the clouds.
The incident became one of the most significant early UFO cases investigated by the United States Air Force and reportedly helped convince some Project Sign investigators that UFOs could be interplanetary spacecraft. The Air Force later concluded that the pilots had witnessed a brilliant meteor—but the men strongly disagreed.
