To a man who wanted to justify himself and show he was loving the people who were worthy of his love, Jesus told a story to call us to go beyond merely loving the worthy and to instead love others not because of who they are, but because of who we are as we follow. Jesus, after all, loved us and gave his life for us while we were unworthy.
