The diaphragm is more than a breathing muscle—it is a pressure-regulating, nervous-system-modulating, fluid-moving powerhouse. When the diaphragm is restricted, weak, over-braced, or poorly coordinated, the body can compensate through the neck, shoulders, low back, pelvic floor, and jaw, creating chronic tension and pain patterns. Poor diaphragm function can alter rib motion, spinal stability, lymphatic drainage, venous return, vagus nerve signaling, and sympathetic "fight-or-flight" tone. In chronic pain, the question is not only "where does it hurt?" but also how is the body breathing, bracing, and managing pressure? That will impact pain.
We always check the diaphragm.
