The ideas of Karl Marx have prevailed for almost 2 centuries, being proven right at every turn. This is not because Marx was a prophet, who was ordeined to see into the future, but because he developed a lens with which to view the world.
This method understands progress and development in all its contadictions. When applied to history it teaches us deep lessons about the development of human society which counteract the reactionary and idealist idea that 'history is just one damned thing after another'.
