The Spiritual Dangers of Heresy - Fr. Jo...

Fr. Peter Heers
About this episode

In this talk, Fr. Hans explores how heresy distorts our vision of the Trinity, blocks the path to theosis, and fuels the despair of our modern age. He traces the Filioque, rationalism, and materialism, showing how ignorance of history blinds us to their ongoing impact. Heresy isn’t abstract—it wounds real people, leaving souls broken and searching for healing. In contrast, Orthodoxy offers renewal through the nous, communion with the Apostles, and life centered on the Eucharist in the parish. Learn why guarding the apostolic truth protects the heart, and how Christ restores wholeness through His Church.

This is the full lecture by Fr. Johannes Jacobse from the conference: "On the Eighth Œcumenical Council: The Catholic Condemnation of the Filioque" that took place on March 14 - 16th, 2024 in Lake Guntersville, AL. The original title of his talk was: "The Spiritual Consequences of the Acceptance of Heresy."

Father Johannes Jacobse has been a priest for over thirty years. Born in Holland, he has a B.A. from the University of Minnesota, an M.Div. from St. Vladimir’s Seminary, studied the Greek language at the University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and is a fellow at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.  Fr. Hans edits the web site Orthodoxy Today that discusses social and moral issues from an Orthodox Christian framework. The success of Orthodoxy Today led to the founding of the American Orthodox Institute, a research and educational organization that engages the cultural issues of the day within the Orthodox Christian moral tradition. He is also the founder of the St. Paisios Brotherhood. Fr. Hans is married and has one daughter.

Our mission is to present and support the Orthodox Christian Way, Truth, and Life, which is Christ Himself — guiding souls to communion in His Body, faithful to the teachings of the Holy Fathers.
