Seán is a semi-autobiographical story about mental illness and suicide. It’s a tragedy and a challenge. Seán is born and raised in South Dublin to a Protestant middle class family. But there is something wrong with him. Unable to cope with what is happening to him Seán attempts suicide and is hospitalised. Seán leaves Ireland for London. Through a mixture of luck and determination, and despite many setbacks along the way, he finds himself a job and also a new relationship with an older woman. But the love of his life succumbs to a terrible illness and Seán is eviscerated by sorrow and the savage return of his tormenting psychosis. Years pass, Seán never returns to work or develops any other close relationships. He spends his days in rumination, attempting to keep mental illness at bay. He walks through the neighbourhood over and over, descends into an alcoholic haze and eventually tries suicide again, this time successfully.
